First Week of IS101

The beginning of this semester has been surprisingly different.

I received my first email from my IS101 professor Saturday night. At first, I thought he was just sending me the syllabus like most professors do. To my surprise it wasn’t just the syllabus, it was also a quiz, and the first two assignments. Along with that came a request to have a meeting. I responded to meet with him the following day early morning. Morning came, and so did the scheduled meeting with my professor. As we started talking the professor made me feel like he genuinely wants his students to succeed. He asked me questions to get to know me, which no other professor has ever done. This reassured me that I chose the right professor. The workload for this class looks very time consuming, but it’s doable. This semester will be the beginning of a new journey.

  2. Thank you for sharing your background and goals with me. Glad you picked the right professor ^_^

Yes, this hands-on computer-based course is more time consuming than a traditional 'lecture and paper' class!

    Welcome to IS101-3012, Fall 2022, Saul :-)

  3. I had the same thoughts as you Saul. At first, I was caught off guard with all the back and forth communication with Mr. Wu prior to the start of the semester. I have never experienced that before with any professor from any institution, especially the part when he wanted to know about my life outside of school. I mean, how many other professors actually care to ask that? He's the first, for my anyways.
And I agree with you, the workload is doable, with lots of opportunities for "bonus credits". We all can pass this class this semester.

  4. I agree with you on Professor Wu, I thought we would just to a quick greet on screen? nope. He got to know me and what I was about. Excellent Professor. Looking forward to this class.

  5. I'm glad I picked the right professor. Some of Professor Wu's actions made me realize the qualities of a good scholar. I hope we can learn from each other and help each other. Pass the exam together!

  6. I agree with your opinion on Professor Wu this course is definitely going to be a challenge with the sheer weekly workload.

  9. I was afraid of taking this class as well but after doing the webEx I felt so much better about this class as well.

  10. I agree! He also sent me an email but I unfortunately was not able to get around to it. Prof. Wu seems like a genuine and honest person who cares about his students.

  11. Unlike you, I purposely kept delaying the WebEx meeting because I dread the idea of doing webcam meetings - when I took biology last semester, I even delayed taking external webcam-proctored tests because it was a process and I got used to having little to no interaction from my professors. However now that I've been introduced to IS101 properly, I have the same outlook as you and many other students here.

  13. I also was surprised by the course work presented so early at the beginning of the course, but I believe that as long as we work consistently we'll make it through!

  14. Most of us shared this impression; meeting the professor made us all feel welcome, particularly since, as you indicated, most instructors don't have the time to glean such details about our backgrounds. Saul, I hope you have a successful adventure!

  15. I wish all my instructors would send me the syllabus ahead of time. Most wait till the first day of class. But yes, Albert Wu is a dedicated instructor and I appreciate what he does for his students.
